The United Kingdom has long been known for having some of the smallest homes in Europe along with the most expensive and poorly built. It can be easy to think about housing in numbers, percentages, bricks and mortar. But we should not forget that housing is fundamentally about people.
This research series starts a conversation about 21st century living and spacial requirements within the contemporary home as it increasingly becomes a place of work and educational attainment. Having enough space to store possessions and entertain guests should complement the home as a place of comfort and delight that supports the well-being of those that live in it.
Our research series is split into four chapters, each looking at the major issues facing our housing industry. Most people will agree we need Bigger, Better and Cheaper homes but is it achievable?
The chapters look to explore what is possible trying to find tangible solutions. The final chapter Counterbalance Homes provides examples of homes that implement our recommendations.
