At Counterbalance, we challenge perceptions and drive innovation through creative thinking. Research is an intrinsic part of our approach: we pride ourselves in finding solutions to everyday problems through critical investigation in a wide range of subjects. In the spirit of our ambition to inspire and catalyse change we welcome opportunities to collaborate with others, be it voices within the construction industry or experts outside it. Below are our current research series which are continuous reviewed and expanded.

The United Kingdom has long been known for having the smallest homes in Europe along with the most expensive and poorly built. It is easy to think about housing in numbers, percentages, bricks and mortar. But we should not forget that housing is fundamentally about people.
This research series looks to start a conversation about 21st century living and spacial requirements within the contemporary home as it increasingly becomes a place of work and educational attainment. Having enough space to store possessions and entertain guests should complement the home as a place of comfort and delight that supports the well-being of those that live in it. The housing layouts presented here are a start to a much wider conversation around Bigger, Better and Cheaper housing.

The River Thames has played an important role in the financial, cultural and physical fabric of London.
We therefore took this as an opportunity to walk the full extend of the GLA element of the River Thames on both sides of the river. Starting on the south bank in Bexley up to Kingston upon Thames and crossing the river ending our journey in Havering.
We will be observing and recording a visual diary along with mapping our findings and publishing them as we complete each element of the route.

If you had 500 words to explain your idea or vision, what would you say and how would you explain it? In a world of many words, sources and data what is a truly good idea?
This series is not about being an activist or being right, but about expressing an idea and analysing the consequences of a decision: discussing its merits and faults publicly. This series is about being concise and in tune with the world we live in, discussing our issues in a healthy and proactive way.
Nothing is final and nothing should be personal but everything is open for discussion.
All the essays in the Project 500 series are 500 words or less and will be related to various topics and themes.
